The Toughest Aspects of Being A Leader

Leadership is one of the greatest privileges and one of the heaviest responsibilities. It’s filled with opportunities to shape culture and empower people, but it also demands courage when the path ahead isn’t clear.

Two of the hardest parts? Carrying responsibility without certainty and letting good people go.

Carrying Responsibility Without Certainty

Leaders make decisions without perfect information. We act before the full picture is clear, while others look to us for confidence we may not feel.

It’s lonely work sometimes, absorbing chaos so the team doesn’t have to, regulating emotions when pressure rises, and carrying the weight home with us long after the workday ends.

But leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about leading forward in the midst of the unknown.

Try this:
1. Name your uncertainty. Identify what’s unknown vs. what’s within your control, then focus on what you can influence.
2. Decide, then adapt. Make the best call with the info you have and stay flexible when new insights come.
3. Set the tone. Your calm becomes your team’s calm. Model steadiness when things feel unstable.

Letting Good People Go

It’s one of the hardest calls a leader makes, parting ways with someone capable and kind, but no longer the right fit for the team or season.

These moments test our courage and our compassion. Sometimes, caring for the whole team means making a hard decision for one person and doing it with clarity and dignity.

Try this:
1. Clarify before you cut. Confirm the issue is truly fit, not fixable.
2. Lead with dignity. Be direct, kind, and clear. Protect their reputation as if it were your own.
3. Care afterward. A check-in, note, or recommendation can turn a hard moment into one marked by respect.

Leading Through the Hard Things

Leadership isn’t about ease, it’s about stewardship. You carry a weight others don’t see, and that’s what shapes your influence.

Keep showing up. Stay curious, resilient, and humble. Lead with both courage and care, and you’ll become the kind of leader your people deserve.
